This is the story of a young girl who fell into a coma due to brainstem cancer but managed to fight back, recover, get married, become pregnant, and give birth while battling cancer. In addition to brain cancer, she also faced breast cancer and a benign breast tumor.

Famela was in a coma for three days while hospitalized at the end of 2012. She had been fighting a malignant cancer attached to her cerebellum and brainstem since 2008.

At the end of 2008, she often complained of headaches. She was only 19 years old and had just graduated from high school, living with her parents in Rajabasa, Bandar Lampung. When the headaches persisted and worsened, and balance issues emerged, making it increasingly difficult for her to stand, her father took her to Jakarta for a CT scan.

The CT scan revealed a malignant tumor called pilocytic astrocytoma located between the right and left cerebellum and attached to the brainstem. The tumor was over 4 cm in size, with septa-like structures resembling a bunch of grapes, stuck between the right and left cerebellum and the brainstem, blocking the fourth ventricle that drains cerebrospinal fluid to the spine. As a result, fluid built up, causing hydrocephalus and continuous headaches. The pressure on the brain from the hydrocephalus and tumor also made it difficult for her to sit for long periods.

To relieve the pressure in her brain from the fluid build-up, she underwent surgery to install a cerebrospinal fluid shunt (VP shunt). However, the tumor could not be removed as it adhered to the right and left cerebellum and the brainstem, pushing against the brainstem.

After the shunt surgery, she underwent 35 sessions of radiation therapy at a hospital in Jakarta. Her condition improved relatively after the surgery and radiation, with symptoms greatly reduced throughout 2009.

However, as the tumor could not be removed, symptoms reappeared in early 2010, about 1.5 years after the radiation therapy. A repeat CT scan in early 2010 showed the tumor had grown from 4 cm to nearly 6 cm. The tumor mass increasingly pressed against the brainstem at the front and the right and left cerebellum at the sides, mainly consisting of cystic tissue filled with fluid.

Her symptoms worsened, affecting her swallowing, sense of smell, vision, and hearing, and making it difficult for her to sit for long periods. The most stressful issue was that she felt dizzy when using her phone and couldn’t stand loud noises, so she mostly lay down.

No further medical action could be taken to address the tumor. Surgery was not an option because the tumor was attached to important parts of the brain and brainstem, with risks of vision loss, permanent paralysis, or even life-threatening consequences.

Between 2010 and 2012, she only consumed Chinese herbal medicine and occasionally received reflexology massages. In late 2012, after a reflexology session, she experienced seizures and had to be rushed to the hospital, where she fell into a coma for three days. Thankfully, she regained consciousness.

A CT scan after the coma surprisingly showed slight improvement in the tumor mass compared to the 2010 CT scan. The cystic fluid mass had significantly reduced, while the solid tumor mass, which contained malignant cells, remained stable or slightly increased. It is possible that the reflexology caused the cystic balloons filled with fluid to burst.

This rupture might have occurred because, post-radiation, the tumor tissue covering the fluid-filled balloons became fragile, and the Chinese herbal medicine weakened it further. As a result, the reflexology caused the tissue to collapse or rupture, and the cyst fluid flowed into the brain matrix and nerve cells, disrupting the brain’s electrical currents, which led to seizures and potentially the coma.

Fortunately, Famela’s condition was managed quickly. Otherwise, it could have been fatal.

After this incident, Famela’s father continued to search for alternative treatments for his daughter’s malignant tumor. If left untreated, the tumor would continue to grow, and similar incidents could recur until her body could no longer endure.

Mr. Suyitno, Famela’s father, eventually discovered information about ECCT. At that time, ECCT had been widely reported for less than a year, especially concerning a similar case (pilocytic astrocytoma in the cerebellum) involving Willy Saputra, a 21-year-old who recovered after two months of ECCT treatment from a semi-comatose state.

Famela’s father took her to Tangerang to request an ECCT device.

When she first used the device, she experienced severe dizziness. After a few days, she began sweating with a very pungent odor, had dark-colored and strong-smelling bowel movements, and urinated with an unusually sharp smell. A week later, she also developed a lot of dandruff on her scalp, and significant discharge from her eyes and ears.

As these waste disposal reactions continued, Famela’s condition gradually improved, her symptoms subsided, and her balance improved.

After three months of using the device, she could walk up to 500 meters, watch TV, use her phone, and her vision, hearing, and sense of smell improved. She no longer felt dizzy from loud noises, and she could once again smell food, which she hadn’t been able to do for two years.

A CT scan after six months showed the tumor mass had significantly reduced. A year later, Famela got married. She gave birth to her first child in 2016 safely and was blessed with a healthy baby. Her health remained stable.

Famela continued to use the ECCT device for her brain until 2018, totaling five years. In 2018, she encountered another issue: a benign tumor (FAM) appeared in her left breast, nearly 5 cm in size, and a potentially malignant tumor around 1 cm in her right breast. She then used a vest device for therapy to address the benign tumor in her breast.

There was no news about her during the pandemic, but early in 2024, marking 11 years of ECCT use or 15 years since her initial brain cancer diagnosis, she shared a photo with her healthy 8-year-old son. Her condition remains healthy, with only occasional minor vision disturbances.

Best wishes for continued health to Mrs. Famela (WS).
