This is the story of the first ECCT user for stage 4 pancreatic cancer who has surpassed 10 years and was recognized as the longest-surviving stage 4 pancreatic cancer patient in Australia.

Mr. Budi Santoso with his wife and siblings during a hiking activity in 2023.
Pancreatic cancer that has spread to the liver typically comes with a grim prognosis. The chances of long-term survival are very slim. Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers worldwide, claiming the lives of many prominent figures.
However, Mr. Budi Santoso managed to defy all the worst odds. It started with the results of a medical examination and diagnosis by his doctor in Australia in 2014, confirming pancreatic cancer that had spread extensively to his liver. Recently, Mr. Budi was declared by an Australian cancer institution as the longest-living survivor of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, currently in good health. His cancer has long been declared clean.
In 2014, his CT scan showed a tumor in the pancreas measuring 1.6 cm, accompanied by calcifications indicating malignancy, and nodules scattered throughout the liver, with the largest reaching 3.6 cm.
With limited medical options both in Australia and globally, Mr. Budi returned to Indonesia and visited C-Care Cancer Research, accompanied by his doctor brother, to request an ECCT device.
The ECCT device created for him was a corset covering the entire abdomen, including the pancreas and liver. He was advised to wear it for 4 sessions of 1 hour per day for the first month. In the second month, the usage increased to 4 sessions of 2 hours.
Several reactions appeared within a few days after using the device, similar to typical ECCT responses, such as strongly odorous urine, dark/black foul-smelling bowel movements, and frequent passing of gas.
After three months of use, his general condition was good and healthy, with no complaints, and the pain he previously experienced had disappeared. However, the PET scan results indicated an increase in the tumor mass size, but there were no signs of new metastasis.
C-Care explained that the mass enlargement compared to its previous size could have occurred due to the gap of more than three months before using the device. The inflammatory process caused by the accumulation of dead cells that were not yet expelled during this period could lead to the swelling of existing nodules, which would eventually be eliminated through urine and feces. The absence of new nodules indicated that the spread stopped during the three months of device use.
Mr. Budi’s physical condition showed no issues. He continued using the ECCT device while maintaining routine check-ups with his doctor in Australia.
From year to year, his condition improved. He no longer used the device after his cancer was declared clean five years ago.
Mr. Budi, now an Australian citizen, resides permanently in Australia with his wife. At 80 years old, he is in excellent health and still participates in activities with his wife and friends, such as mountain climbing and hiking.
Every day, he wakes up at 2 a.m., takes a shower, and performs the Tahajud prayer, praying for his parents and siblings who have passed away, for his wife, and for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—even though he has not yet been blessed with any. He then continues to read the Quran until dawn, followed by heading to the mosque for the Fajr prayer.
In 2023, Mr. Budi received an award from an Australian cancer organization as the longest-surviving stage 4 pancreatic cancer case that had metastasized to the liver and remained in good health.
Ten years as a survivor since the initial diagnosis, healthy and free from cancer. May Mr. Budi Santoso remain healthy until 90, 100, and beyond. (WS)
